Information about the 55th reunion of the Class of 1953

Date/Time: Sunday, May 18, 2008 - 11:00 a.m. (Brunch)
Place: Marriott Hotel at LaGuardia Airport; 102-05 Ditmars Blvd, East Elmhurst
Cost: To be determined. About $75 per person

After graduation I began my secretarial career with Eagle Electic Company. In 1954 I married Charles Bartulis and we had two daughters. I stayed home and raised my daughters until my divorce from Charles in 1980. I returned to work with a new career in real estate. In 1994 I began working for the Nassau County Sheriff's Department. In 1956 I married Lois Condon from Newtown; we are married 45 years and have two sons, two daughters and seven grandchildren. I'm semi-retired from construction (masonry) work, and currently involved in Little League baseball with my grandchildren and I love it!!!! After leaving high school I took a job as a secretary to a vice president of a New York bank. In 1957 I married my husband, Stanley, who is a graduate of Bishop Loughlin High. Edith Mayer Cherovsky 

After Newtown I went to Queens College where I majored in psychology. Worked at Time Inc. ( now Time Warner) for ten years as an advertising editor for Time, Life and Sports Illustrated magazines. Married for 35 years to Erwin Cherovsky and we have two daughters. The older one lives in New York and is single. The younger is married, lives in New Rochelle, and has two sons: Sammy who will be three on December 1st and Zachary who is five months old. They are the light of my life. We lived in Manhattan on the upper East side until May 1992 when we moved to Englewood, New Jersey. I have been a travel consultant in New York since 1980. echerovsky@nj.rr.com How she looks today.
Veronica (Bonnie) McAnaw Niedermeyer 

I received my BA and MA in mathematics from Hunter. In January 1957 I was a paid teacher at Newtown after doing my student teaching there. I taught there for a short time before leaving to start my family. Joe and I were married in 1957. We have four sons and a daughter and twelve grandchildren. We lived in Roslyn for 10 years and have been in Connecticut for 32 years. All of our children graduated from our local high school, Newtown HS too. I returned to work in a business office, became certified in CT and returned to the classroom. We are both now retired.

I graduated from CCNY in February 1958, then spent a couple of years in the Army. Married classmate Ruth Sievert in 1961 and moved to California. Retired from Hughes Aircraft Company in 1989. We have two children and three grandchildren.

I worked for an insurance company for two years after graduating then settled down to motherhood. I have been married 47 years and have five children and 12 grandchildren. My husband is a retired battallion chief for the New York Fire Department.

After graduating from Newtown, I attended Pace College where I received my BBA in Accounting and Business Administration in 1957. In 1975 I received my MBA from Adelphi University. I have held various accounting positions. First at Standard Brands, then several Wall Street firms. I also worked for Michelin Tire in Lake Success. The last 22 years were with Suffolk County in the Treasurers Office. I retired in December 1999. In October 1963 I married Joyce Bermel. We have 3 sons and one daughter. We also have 2+ grandchildren. We lived in Sayville, LI from 1969 to 2002, when we moved to Bernville, Pa, where we currently reside. jobi@comcast.net

I am currently living in Florida with my husband of 44 years. Previously we lived on Long Island, where we raised our two children. Following graduation from Newtown, I attended and graduated from NYU in Feb. 1958. Served in the U.S. Army from March 1958 - March 1960. Following discharge worked for a Catholic newspaper for five years in advertising and editorial. Left the newspaper in January 1966 and began working with NYC Department of Social Services. Worked with DSS/Administration for Children's Service for 35 years. Retired Jan. 2001 as Supervisor in Child Protective Services. Married and have one child currently attending NYU on a four year scholarship in the scholars program. stf1935@aol.com

For most of my career I worked as a computer programmer, manager, and software consultant. For the past fifteen years I have been writing and managing documentation of computer software and hardware products. I live in Orange, California with my wife Jo Ann. She has two randchildren, Alexis and Georgie. After graduating from Newtown, I enrolled at the City College of New York in September 1953. I majored in mathematics and graduated in June l957 with Bachelor of Science degree. In September l957, I enrolled at the MIT and received the Master of Science degree in mathematics in June l959. I continued my studies at the MIT and received the Ph.D. degree in mathematics in September l966. While completing my doctoral thesis, I was employed in the Research Division of IBM. Helen (Midge) Mitchell Williams 

I worked for a short time for Lever Brothers in Manhattan and in 1954 married a man I met at church in Jackson Heights. He was from Atlanta, Georgia. We lived in North Carolina and finally settled in Greenville, South Carolina. We have been married for 48 years this November and we were blessed with two daughters and in the last year we experienced the birth of our first grandchildren (twin grandsons).Volunteer work has always been present in my adult life. Tennis is my hobby and I am pleased to be able to play three days a week. My husband retired in 1987 as an Insurance Broker. After being a partner in a local business he went to work for Marsh McLennan and that is the firm that he retired from. We have spent some wonderful times traveling and meeting lots of interesting people. God has been good to us and for that we continue to count our blessings. Momsie10@aol.com  How she looks today.

I married Melvin Goldstein in 1956 and enjoyed a long and successful secretarial career in the legal profession, eventually becoming the office manager for a large and busy court reporting firm in Manhattan. I divorced then happily remarried (15 years) to Alfred Fields. We reside in sunny Fort Lauderdale and are both retired. I have a daughter and three grandchildren. bklynbrenda@yahoo.com
Gary Mokotoff 

I attended the University of Chicago and then joined IBM as a computer programmer in 1959. One of the first persons in the computer software industry, I developed systems that IBM delivered with its early computers. In 1968, I formed my own software company that developed systems for retail chains. In 1993, I left the computer business and now devote my time to my new love, Jewish genealogy. I am a publisher, author and lecturer on Jewish and Eastern European genealogy. I am married, have three children and three grandchildren. I started working for General Electric Company right after graduation, where I met my husband, John. Got married in September 1955, have four daughters, and now have eleven grandchildren--8 boys and 3 girls. Have been a widow now since 1997. Worked full time for American General Finance for 22 years. Have sung in a community chorus for about 30 years. Also sing in my church choir and other various choirs. Walter Mortensen

After graduation he worked as a repairman/technician on dispensing machines, then attended the Univeersity of Virginia from 1954-1956. He then worked for FAO Schwartz as a buyer for many years. He was married and had 4 children. He died in 1989. Reported by Ruth Woolley Brotman.
Hannelore Muller Gutwirt 

I majored in languages at Newtown and continued in this field, landing my first job in the travel department at the United Nations in New York. From there I continued into the private sector, working as FIT (foreign independent travel) manager at a deluxe travel agency in New York. Got married in the 60s to an avid tennis player (pro at times) – no children. Moved to Miami Beach, where I continued managing travel agencies for over 30 years. I have seen the world from A (Australia) to Z ( Zaire and Zululand), covering more than 100 countries, and am classified "A World Traveler". Now that my husband passed on, I am living in Central Florida enjoying what I know best: travel, tennis, good books and music, plus, of course my computer. gutwirtovah@aol.com How she looks today.

After graduation I moved to Greene County, New York, working on a dairy farm and then in a seafood restaurant as a cook. In 1954 I married Ann. We have 5 children and 10 grandchildren. I started my career with the NYS Dept. of Correctional Services in 1957 as a Correction Officer at Green Haven orreectional Facility. During the next 37 years I also worked at Coxsackie, Eastern and Greene Correction Facilities, retiring as a Lieutenant. Ann and I are enjoying our retirement, spending our summers in Coxsackie, New York and November to May in Venice, Florida. Only

After graduating Newtown, I served in the U.S. Navy for four years. My career was with the New York State Depatertment of Correctional Services where I retired as a sergeant. I am married to Joan A. Mottle, a Newtown graduate. We have two children and two grandchildren. I am enjoying my retirement years with my classic car collection and traveling. Joan and I have been to Bermuda and the Hawaiian Islands.

After Newtown I did various kinds of mechanical work (cars, business machines, appliances), went into the appliance business, taught trades for Port of Authority and N.Y.C. Board of Education. Left New York, traveled the country ended up on Cannery Row, Monterey Ca. in our own health food restaurant. Lived on New Age communities in Tennessee, West Virginia, Arkansas and Oregon. Had my own contracting companies (small) in California, Arizona and New York Have seven wonderful children, four grand children and three patient ex-wives. I learned several healing modalities including Reiki, body balancing and yoga. Sandra Nord Lazaroff

After Newtown, I attended Queens College, received an AS in Chemical Technology from NYCCC. While my husband pursued his career as a microbiology professor, we lived on both coasts, traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and abroad. Thirty years after graduating from Newtown, I returned to college to obtain a B.S. in Computer Science from SUNY Binghamton and became a system's analyst. I am active in our synagogue's Sisterhood and in the local knitting guild. I have been retired for four years. We have lived in the Binghamton, N.Y. area for 35 years, have two children and two grandchildren. smnlaz@stny.rr.com
