Tarmaggiore Figliuolo  After attending Hunter College and later Queens College, I married and had four children--three sons and a daughter. In1972 when my youngest was in second grade, I began working at Great Neck South Middle School in the Math Center. I have been working there for the last 30 years, providing supplementary instruction to 6th, 7th and 8th graders. I am now a grandmother of eight and continue to live in Great Neck. James Taylor My education after Newtown included undergraduate and graduate studies in agricultural economics at Cornell, Ohio State University, and the University of Wisconsin. I have been employed as: cryptographer, U.S. Army (1957-60); claims adjustor, Liberty Mutual Company (1960-61); economist, Goverment of Nicaragua (1965-67); associate professor of economics, New Mexico University (1968-76); and economist, Inter-American Development Bank (1976-95). I retired in 1995 and have had an active life, including going back to school for fun (especially Spanish literature); volunteer work for abused, neglected and low-income children; and the virtual re-creation of the neighborhood where I grew up (Inwood), including writings on the construction of the Harlem River Ship Canal, the Battle of Fort Washington, and personal recollections. George W. Temme After graduation I worked for Eastern Airlines. Started in the mail room as a clerk, then became a "gopher" for Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker who was at that time was CEO of Eastern. Enlisted in the Navy in 1954 for four years during the Korean conflict. Upon discharge from the Navy, I worked at a variety of jobs until in 1962 I was hir ed by Grumman Aircraft as a technical writer. Worked there for 33 years as a senior airframe technical writer. Retired from Grumman (now Northrop Grumman) in 1994. Lived in Levittown, New York for 34 years. Relocated after second marriage in 1998 to Bellingham, Washington in the Pacific Northwest. Barbara Terins
Goodman Married James F. Goodman (not a Newtownite) in 1955. Still married and have two daughters and four grandsons and three granddaughters. After graduation I went to work for AT&T where I stayed until I had my first daughter. I became a stay-at-home mom. My husbands work took us from New York, New Jersey, and then to Massachusetts where we stayed for 18 years. It was in Massachusetts I became involved with town politics and went to work full time in 1978 as the assistant to the executive secretary for the Selectmen. I stayed there 10 years until my husband retired and we moved to Pennsylvania 14 years ago. Retirement was not for him, so he went to work as a teacher in the local elementary school, teaching children with learning disabilities. I am still enjoying retirement. Joseph Themann Jr I was known as Babe in my soccer team days. I spent two years in the Navy (1954-1956) on board a fleet oiler, USS Waccamaw. Married a local girl, Jeanne Frabizio, in 1958. We have four children (two girls and two boys) and four grandkids. The girls both graduated SUNY Stony Brook. Joseph is a master electrican and Jon is a auto technician. After the service I had various jobs including school custodian, bar tender, Suffolk County jail guard and finally worked in the propane gas industry for 35 years retiring in 1996. Fox-Karabel I went on to Ohio University, Athens, Ohio. I graduated in l957, got married to another graduate, William Michael Fox, and moved to southern California. I have been here since then, other than a company transfer to Iowa and Wisconsin. Ernest P. Toelken After graduation I spent four years in the Air Force, then attended Embry Riddle Aeronautical Institute in Florida. I was hired by Pan Am at JFK, where I met my wife, a flight attendant for TWA. We settled in Nesconset (Suffolk County) raising two daughters. Upon the demise of Pan Am in 1991, I worked for Tower Air at JFK until retiring in 1999. Tortorici After Newtown I started at career as an engineering cost estimator for numerous firms. I was on active duty in the Army during the Lebanon crisis and was recalled to active duty during the Berlin crisis, served five years and was honorably discharged as a Specialist 5th class. During the best part of my life I met this terrific girl, Charlotte. We were married in May 1960, 42 years ago, and had two boys. One is married and one is still single. Joan Tschanen Zieres She went on from Newtown to graduate from Hofstra College with a BA in Sociology in 1957. She married classmate George M. Zieres Jr. in 1959 and was the mother of three children and the grandmother of seven. After many years of steadfast service to others as a registered nurse and as a deacon in her church, Joan passed away in Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 25, 1995. Fetherston After graduating from the Coop course at Newtown, I continued working for The Bank of New York in the City until 1958. I married Rich Fetherston in 1956 and had the first of three daughters in 1959. I was a stay-at-home mom. I also took care of my mom, who lived with us until she passed away in 1989. Anthony Urciuoli I attended CCNY and received my degree in June 1957. After graduation, I spent the summer traveling in Europe. I served two years in the U.S. Army. Worked 34 years for New York Life Insurance Company in various managerial capacities. Married Marjorie and we have three sons and now two daughter-in-laws. Have lived in Great Neck for over 35 years. After retiring, my wife and I started a small business selling Native American jewelry and pottery from the Southwest. We visit our friends on the reservations often. Paul John Vlachos After Newtown, I joined the U.S. Marine Corps serving until June 1959. Met my wife of 43 years, Lillian, while stationed in Philadelphia. We have four grown children: Chris, Lori, Terri and Paul. We also have two wonderful grandchildren, Joey and Stevie. In July of 1959, I went to work for Pepperell Mfg. Co. as an IBM machine operator. Arthur J. Wardle I enlisted in the US Air Force in October 1953 and retired March 1974. I was stationed worldwide with the Air Force Security Police. I married Margaret Birkl in l958. We had three children; our son died in l983. I joined the Hampton, New Hampshire, police department in l976 and retired in l995 as a detective. Joan Welsh Miritello After graduating from Newtown, I was employed as a secretary with Lone Star Cement Co., working in the engineering department. Later married Robert Miritello (Newtown graduate). We lived in Hicksville, N.Y. for a few years and then moved to Florida. I have three children, Keith, Barbara and Nancy. Have resided in Florida now for 32 years. Divorced in 1984. I am now teaching etiquette to young people, and truly enjoy this. My interests are going to the theatre, dining out and spending time with my family and friends. kebana@webtv.net |

Robert J. Wilbert Just a few days after graduating from Newtown I enrolled at the University of Maryland and graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology. I then enlisted in the Marine Corps and was a Marine officer from 1957 to 1960. Married the "girl across the street" in 1959 and we now have three children and five grandchildren. Spent most of my vocational years working for the State University of New York in the computing field. Retired in 1998 and now have time to enjoy the family. Irmgard Wilhelm Huhn After graduation, I worked in Manhattan as a bookkeeper. In 1956 I married Erich Zieger, a co-worker, and I moved to Somerville, N.J. Erich passed away in 1965. We had two daughters. In 1966 I married a widower, Neal Huhn, who had three children. We bought a house in Bridgewater, N.J., which is where I still reside. We inter-adopted one another's children and had 3 more children (6 girls and 2 boys). In 1981 Neal passed away. After being a stay-at-home Mom for 23 years, I went to work for Somerset County Courthouse. In 1997 I retired. I babysit for two of my grandchildren two days a week, (I have 15 grandchildren: 13 girls and 2 boys) square dance several times a week, bowl, I'm active in church organizations and love to travel. Brotman The day after graduation, I was on the bus to SUNY at Oneonta, and already a week late for the start of the January semester! I completed 2 years of credits and decided I really did not want to be a teacher. I married fellow classmate Richard Johnson in 1955. We had 4 children. We divorced in 1972 and in 1973 I moved to Florida. I remarried in 1976 and owned and operated a printing business with my husband. (I am sad to report that Richard Johnson passed away in 1983) I have 13 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter. Marilyn Ziegler Gehr I am married to Rudy Gehr, class of January 1953. We were only acquaintances at Newtown but became friends in Lutheran Club at Queens College. We both graduated in 1957. We celebrated our 40th anniversary this year. We have two sons; the older is married and the father of two boys and a girl, and the younger is still a bachelor. Andrew, the older, writes grants and such for the NYS Department of Labor. Russell is an optical physicist at Los Alamos National Labs working on things none of the rest of us can even comprehend. Rudy and I are both retired. We were both in the human resources profession. His final position was Regional Personnel Director for the NYS Department of Transportation, Region I. George Zieres Died in May 2000. After Newtown, he attended Davis & Elkins College in West Virginia and then was with the Army in the National Army Security Agency. He was an electrical engineer and worked for Pan American Airways and subsequently Bendix Aviation, Little Rock Airmotive and Mitsubishi International. He married classmate Joan Tschanen. They had a daughter, two sons and seven grandchildren. She died in 1995 and he subsequently married Carol Thompson. Family postal address known. |

Alexander After graduating from college, I tried social work for about two years, taught very briefly, and then settled in to a long term job as an employment interviewer with the NYS Dept. of Labor, mostly placing nurses and other medical personnel. I took an early retirement offer in 1996. Since my retirement I have enjoyed the resources New York City offers, going to ballet and modern dance performances, theater, concerts and museums. I’ve taken sculpture and other classes and have dabbled a bit into writing poetry. I spend the winter months in Florida enjoying outdoor swimming.
