JRI-Poland Index One remarkable database on the Internet is the JRI-Poland index to 19th century Polish-Jewish births, marriages and deaths. Its goal is to index every vital record of the Jews of Poland. To date more than 600,000 records including some from Bialystok. Shown above are index entries of some Tartasky births from Bialystok. Because they were recorded during the time Bialystok was part of czarist Russia, all names include patronymics, that is the name of the father. The second line, the birth of Lejzor Gershonowicz Tartacki means the birth of Leizer son of Gershon. Girl's patronymics have -ovna in place of -wicz, as is true of the last line, the birth of Gittel, daughter of Zelig Tartasky. She was the grandaunt of Barbara Becker and Lois Sherman. In rare cases, there are even three generations shows as is true of the first line: Izrael Menachemoiwicz Lejbowicz Tartacki (Israel, son of Menachem, son of Lejb), This entry is for the father of Morton Terry. |
