Social Security Application

If a person is deceased, it is possible to get his/her application for Social Security. It is valuable because it includes the person's birth date and names of father and mother. Often documents such as these are the only documentation of the maiden name of immigrant's mother.

These documents are considered primary evidence by genealogists because they were prepared by the indiviudal rather than a thrid party and therefore such information as date of birth is considered more accurate than from third parties.

Shown above is the application for Hyman Tarre (Chaim Tartasky), the father-in-law of Sylvia Tarre. The named father, "Louis Tarr," is Leizer Tartasky, the brother of Yechaskel Tartasky.
